What Happens When You Put Diesel in a Petrol Car?

We’ve all been there — rushing to the petrol station, distracted, and before you realize it, you’ve just pumped diesel into a petrol car.

It’s a common mistake in Malaysia, especially when driving different cars or using unfamiliar pumps. But what happens next? Will your car still start? Is your engine gone for good?

Let’s break it down clearly.

What’s the Difference Between Petrol and Diesel

To understand what happens, you need to know that petrol and diesel work very differently.

  • Petrol engines rely on spark plugs to ignite the fuel.
  • Diesel engines don’t use spark plugs — they depend on high compression to generate enough heat to ignite the diesel fuel.

That’s why petrol and diesel have different chemical properties, viscosity (thickness), and ignition points.

So when diesel enters a petrol engine, the combustion process becomes completely disrupted — the fuel doesn’t ignite properly, causing the engine to misfire, stall, or fail to start altogether.

What Happens When Diesel Enters a Petrol Engine

  1. The car may not start at all
Diesel doesn’t vaporize easily like petrol, so your spark plugs can’t ignite it. The engine struggles or refuses to start.
  2. Engine misfiring or rough idling
Even if it starts, the engine will sputter, jerk, and possibly stall — because diesel isn’t meant to burn that way.
  3. Black smoke from exhaust
Diesel residue can cause incomplete combustion, leading to visible black smoke.
  4. Fuel system contamination
Diesel is thicker and can clog injectors, fuel filters, and lines designed for petrol. If not flushed out fast, it can cause permanent damage.

What To Do Immediately After Realising the Mistake

If you’ve just pumped the wrong fuel, here’s what you must do.

1. Do NOT start the engine

Starting the car circulates diesel through your fuel system. That’s when damage happens.
Even turning the ignition halfway (“ON” mode) can prime the fuel pump.

2. Push or tow your car to side

If you’re already at the petrol station, inform the staff. They usually deal with this mistake more often than you think.

3. Call a tow truck or workshop

Get your car towed to a trusted car service centre. Don’t risk driving it — even “just to the next junction.”

4. Drain and clean the fuel tank

The car service center will drain out all the diesel, clean the tank, and flush the entire fuel line.
*This step is crucial — diesel left behind can mix with petrol later and cause long-term damage.

How to Avoid Pumping the Wrong Fuel

  1. Double-check the nozzle before refuelling
In Malaysia, petrol pumps are usually yellow (RON95) or green (RON97), while diesel pumps are often black or blue.
Always read the label on the pump handle and confirm it matches your car’s fuel type before inserting it.
  2. Look at your fuel cap or owner’s manual
Most cars have a clear label near the fuel cap that states whether the vehicle runs on petrol or diesel. Use it as a quick reference.
  3. Avoid distractions at the petrol station
Taking phone calls or rushing can easily cause a slip-up. Take a few seconds to check before you pump — it can save you in repairs.
Whether it’s diesel in a petrol car or petrol in a diesel engine, one rule stays the same: Stop, don’t start, and get help immediately.
